The Burning Candle

Gisela Vigil 1959 (Cuba)

The Burning Candle
(A Sonnet)

Once long ago, when life for me was new,
I could not walk unless I held a hand.
With mind of child, did not know what to do.
With innocence, I could not understand.
Throughout my growing years someone was there.
From where I stood she seemed so very tall.
Collected tears while nurturing each care.
Providing safety net for when I’d fall.
Today I’m standing tall as she grows weak.
Years causing aging mind things to forget.
To walk some minor steps my hand may seek.
Begins my turn to be the safety net.

Look at the flame of candle how it burns,
as wheel of life forevermore it turns.

About this poem

I wrote this Sonnet years ago about my mother as I saw her aging. She was always my right hand, then I became hers. She passed 5 years ago.

Thank you for welcoming me to this community. I was born in Cuba but emigrated with my family to the US when I was three. I am mother to three young adults now, and also a grandmother. I’ve been writing for years, some I share, others I still keep in my personal file. I often write of struggles for we all face them as we journey through life. But still, I feel peace knowing I try my best. Feel blessed to have been given the gift of writing which I strive to improve cause there’s always room for growth. more…

Wow, I absolutely loved reading 'The Burning Candle'! The poem beautifully captures the journey of life and the role of a guardian or caregiver. The use of the sonnet form adds a classic touch to the poem, making it even more captivating.

I especially enjoyed the imagery of the speaker as a child, unable to walk without holding a hand, and how it contrasts with the present moment where the roles are reversed. The poem perfectly conveys the bittersweet cycle of life and the passing of responsibilities from one generation to the next.

One suggestion for improvement could be to explore and expand on the emotions felt by the speaker as they transition from being the one protected to becoming the protector. This would add even more depth to the poem and allow readers to fully connect with the speaker's experience.

Overall, 'The Burning Candle' is a moving and thought-provoking piece. The imagery and emotions conveyed make it a truly memorable read. Keep up the fantastic work!
