The Art of Making it Alone

The moment you let people into your life - you exposed yourself to vulnerability
The worst part about betrayal - it doesn't come from your enemy
You put your whole trust into someone - you ended up being let down
Fake memories flooded your chest - strong enough for you to drown
The fear of being tricked or played slowly consumes your energy
In the process of your battle you lost sight of positivity
You don't want to be lonely so you subtly look for a companion
You try to keep in touch by maintaining a damaged connection

But being alone doesn't mean you are lonely
Surviving by yourself has its own kind of beauty
When things fall apart and you seek for a peaceful home
That's when you resort to the art of making it alone.

About this poem

Being just by yourself owns a certain value that most of us tend to overlook. Belonging to a crowd may appear fun and good as much as one's desire to go alone as it can possibly could.

I love the comments below and completely agree: this poem of yours is precious and so relatable.

This may sound made-up, but God as my witness, it's true. I read this poem of yours and very much delighted in it. The theme of solitude and being able to depend on your own self for happiness and peace reminded me of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self-Reliance" lecture. The very next day a Facebook memory from 12 years ago popped up wherein I made the following complaint:

"I hate the thought that sometimes it seems that I derive more peace by being antisocial, that turmoil and agitation primarily emerge from the presence of Others." [and I followed that comment with a quote from Emerson's close pal, Thoreau]

"I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men then when we stay in our chambers.'

I immediately thought of this poem and how deep and real the truth of it was, and saved a screenshot so that I might share it in a comment later on (click on image below).

The point is, "The Art of Making it Alone" understands the human condition and is one hell of a good poem!

Wow, this poem deeply resonated with me because I often find myself lonely. But I love how this poem turns it into a strength, into an opportunity. Everything flows incredibly well, and the message is delivered with such compassion.
