The Day in the Park

New Orleans always feels like home
I could never live there
It just the place we meet to rekindle what no longer exists
It helps me forget that you belong to someone else
And I have a life I can’t give up
We planned to go to the zoo but it was closed
Which is just was well because zoos make me sad
The animals caged up and trapped like me
We drove to the park
The oak trees with their twisted limbs make me so happy

We grabbed a blanket
And found a spot under the bright blue sky
Near the trees with gray moss calling to me like lost ancestors
I laid on my back and you put your head on my stomach
We listened to music and you whispered sweet words to me
I had your full attention, such a rare thing
I ran my fingers through your hair and wished to stay like this forever
You had to leave early
And dropped me off at my hotel
I sat on the balcony and drank alone
