Lullaby of Many Moons”

“Lullaby of Many Moons”

One night I walked the foggy wood,
beneath a five moon cluster;
Observing it through leafy hood,
enchanted by its golden luster

Sleepy thicket, quiet and still
but for the tree frogs on the boughs;
The air was musky, dank and chill-
a fear in me it did arouse

Impervious path, I had to kick
away the thick and thorny vines;
I held fast to my walking stick,
and carried on toward the pines

The moons then shone
more bright than day,
as if five suns were in the sky
A trail they painted for my way;
their comfort to me did abide

When from the forest’s edge I looked,
there, in the clearing, boldly stood
a buck whose massive antlers shook
to warn of something dire afoot

Most careful not to make a sound,
my body quaked in discontent;
I quickly turned myself around
and back into the wood I went…

The five moons led me to a field
where wildflowers dance
into the night;
-No need to tame away the weald
of thick and thorny vines that bite

Instead, I laid my body down
upon a tufted quilt of blooms,
and fell asleep to whispered sounds-
a lullaby of many moons

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

    A truly entertaining and well written poem whose meter and rhythmic cadence work its mood out perfectly.

    I’m pretty certain who this writer might be, and if I’m right, her works alway carry a fresh and deep level of enchantment, and remind me of poems such as W. B. Yeats’, “The Song of Wandering Aengus”.

      Awesome...let me know what, if anything, stands out to you or maybe something specific you may have liked...? the votes are ok, but a proper dialogue serves to exchange views, opinions, or feelings as well.

    I reread this poem many times for the imagery the writer created. I walked with the writer in this poem. I loved the cadence of the lines. Along with the unforced use of rhyme.
