Each Heart Is Called

Each heart is called
To reconcile
Life’s hurts

I have dealt with mine
And
My path now lies
In
Here and now

I will not put my hand
To the plough
Of
Self Justification
And turn the ugly clods
Of
Past’s resentments

I will not scatter
Seeds of accusation
To fall
In furrowed threats

I will not sit
Like a lording carrion crow
On judgment's fence
Ever returning
To pick over
The carcass of the past

Nor, will I sit down
And lick
Self pity’s wounds

Forgive,
Forget,
Move on!

My road
Is
Here and now
And
The future
Beckons me.

About this poem

In the course of this life we can all be 'hurt'. When that occurs we have a choice, as to how we will respond. Written in October 2004 this poem is a personal meditation of the determined choices that I made in a dificult season.

Absolutely POWERFUL! The defiant rejection of the Past’s grim grip over one’s present existence and future possibilities is ‘hammer-dropping’ to say the least.

No one—NOT ONE leaves this human existence of ours unscathed; but this doesn’t mean we have to leave it trembling beneath the shadow of so-called Fate.

Not at all. We have the power to both acknowledge past ills, and the power to move on from them. Not that they haven’t become part of us—make no mistakes, they have—but we take control of our lives when we refuse to allow them to dictate the kind of people we wish to be.

Forgiveness and Self-Reliance are to my mind the backbone of this poem.

I don’t know what was happening in 2004, but I’m glad you had strength enough to express this. I think a lot of people out there could derive a great deal of inspiration and esteem from works like these. Hope you continue to write and share …
