The Dream of Us

I dreamed of you last night
My dreams won’t even lie to me
They showed you barely there
Giving me just enough attention to keep me from letting go
Revealing that dark dance we performed for way too long

I woke up and could not breathe.
The weight of your memory choking me
I drank coffee to resuscitate myself
And told the cat I know the truth now
You never really loved me

I drove to work
The fog was rolling in this morning
I felt it’s melancholy call
It commiserated with me
It shielded me from the sun and let me wallow in my pity

I recalled a few pleasant memories
And played them on repeat
I lied to my ego and told myself you did love me
I reminded myself I  walked away from my addiction to you
I left out the fact that I never closed the door completely
And repeatedly let you sneak in

I remembered that you are gone now
I am sad but I can breathe again
I am free if I choose to stop replaying the tribute
I am recovering from the dream of us
I will stop choking on your memory
