The Man Has Let Go
With the enthusiasm
of a small child,
with the wishful thinking
of a baby born,
with the energy
of a star brighter than the sun,
he battles the demons
who knock on his walls.
Not captivated as I was,
not disbelieving as I became,
the ugliness hammered on,
relentless to the last.
Though even his tears
refused to fall,
though his limbs
stood strong in my sight,
I knew his mind
was breaking,
the creatures were making darkness
in the light of his thoughts.
Dear Lord,
Sweet Jesus,
the world is falling to pieces
for this man has let go.
No one expected him to fail,
but the Devil knew the man well,
cry and hope for the end,
for there’s nothing more to tell.
