Pearl Prynne

The woman and her child
raised above the crowd,
looked upon with scorn
in a silence screaming loud.
From a mother
of no innocence,
the tiny being was born,
a red tint always its countenance.
Yes, scarlet with blood
of past acts done,
is the poor babe of sin
wanted by none.
Daughter of a holy man
who was not holy at all,
an ambitious priest
who had too far to fall.
Dear Pearl,
where will you go
after all the townspeople
finally know?
And while your mother
hides in the letter,
will you have a chance
to do anything better?
Go now, child, far away,
to a different place
where no one will recognize
the features of your face.
