In The Deep, Deep Wood

“In the Deep, Deep Wood”

I long to be lost
in the deep deep wood,
and sleep among the natives
upon the forest bed,
made merry by sweet earthy scents
swirling ‘round my head…

Winged warblers serenade me
with their soulful psalms
Furry friends keep close to warm me
as the night chill comes

Dawning skies awaken me
to a delightful feast
Crushed hickories, sweet berries,
and the company of beasts

Leaves laden with dewdrops
shimmy-shake themselves free
Their soft, soothing showers
refresh and renew me

Playful trees swing and sway,
rays of sunshine peek in
To give light and warmth
as a new day begins…

I will pass the time
chirping and munching
hissing and cackling
sniffing and scurrying
climbing and snacking
rolling and chomping
sunning and romping
foraging, huddling
nesting and cuddling

…I may stay lost forever

About this poem

I find comfort in the natural world, especially surrounded by the sights, scents and sounds of the forest. I hope this poem helps the reader to experience, if just a little, the joy it gives to me.

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…

I love the way as I read it I started to live on the borderline between human and animal. What a sweet relief it was to be for a moment or two a woodland animal. The " I wlspebd my time. . . " paragraph was to me a great example of how words can create metamorphosis. I really don't generally like rhymed poems but I almost didn't notice it here. It did the work of moving the orose along with satisfying stops for the rhyme. That doesn't explain well what I mean. I don't have the skill here
