Sonnet X

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

I’d hanged my heart upon the bow of fate
In hope that on some future day, we’d meet.
Within a time when wisdom bade me wait
Thine unknown kiss was still cherished as sweet.

Thy love yet unknown...thy tender embrace
Was secretly my innermost delight.
Ere I had heard thy voice or seen thy face,
Thy phantom was unveiled before my sight.

A mysterious friend was that grey ghost
Who charmingly didst accompany me
In ballrooms dancing amidst a grand host
Of onlookers who tarried anxiously.

Heretofore, I have awaited thine hand
Which is a rareish treasure to demand.

About this poem

This is a dedication to whomever I am fated to marry. I would like to be more romantic, and dance in the ballroom with this lady.

This meets all the requirements of a good sonnet: It is well-rhymed, the metrical lines are done well, and the argument has merit in the sense of meaning and poetic language.
The whole thing is carried out well which makes this poem a pleasure to read.
