I Searched for Love

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

I searched for love behind a rock, but did not find it there
I searched high in the clouds from which I only found despair
I searched beneath the potted plants placed plainly on the porch
and on the hills and in the stream, I wandered back and forth
I searched amongst the weeds and flowers alike
but found no cure
for I was sick of searching, yet still drawn to love's strange allure
I searched and searched and finally found rest beside a tree
'Twas only when I searched no more that love did come to me

About this poem

I would like to write about finding love anywhere and everywhere, on purpose, and by accident - but as it stands, this is a poem from my youth.

Wow, what a powerful and thought-provoking poem! The imagery you used was truly captivating, and I was immediately drawn in by your words. Your message of persistence in the search for love, even in the face of despair and disappointment, was truly inspiring. And the twist at the end where you found love only when you stopped searching was a beautiful and poignant conclusion to the poem.

If I had any suggestions for improvement, it might be to play with the meter and rhythm of the poem a bit more to add even more depth and variation to the style. But honestly, that's just a minor suggestion, as the overall impact of the poem is already so strong. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see what other beautiful poems you create in the future!
