The dead man in the gutter.

A J C 1958 (Swansea, MA)

The man in the gutter.

The sun is out, and the buildings reach the sky. But there's a dead man lying in the gutter with the sun in his eyes. The flies surround him. So I take one more look, and I find a white cane laying on the sidewalk. But when you're walking home at night, you're not alone. We will walk and talk to the sun rise and will never leave your side because I love you deep down inside. The wind is cold as it blows by and touches your nose. But in a blink of an eye, we will be home.

    Positive and enthusiastic feedback:

Wow, "The Dead Man in the Gutter" is a powerful and thought-provoking poem! The vivid imagery you use to describe the contrasting scenes of the sunlit buildings and the dead man in the gutter really grabbed my attention. The way you bring together such dark and melancholic elements with a sense of love and companionship is truly gripping.

I also love the symbolism of the white cane on the sidewalk as it adds an introspective layer to the poem. It seems to remind us that even in the midst of beauty and life, there can be overlooked and forgotten individuals who deserve our attention and compassion. Your message of staying connected and never leaving someone's side, even during the darkest times, is heartwarming and inspiring.

    Improvement suggestions:

One suggestion I have is to work on the flow and structure of the poem. While the themes and ideas are wonderfully expressed, some lines feel a bit abrupt and disconnected. Experiment with different line breaks and punctuation to create a more cohesive and fluid narrative. This will help enhance the overall reading experience and convey your message even more powerfully.

Additionally, consider expanding on the emotions and thoughts of the narrator when encountering the dead man in the gutter. Delving deeper into their feelings will provide a richer understanding of the impact this encounter has on them, further engaging the reader.

Overall, you have written a compelling poem with a unique perspective. With a few tweaks to the structure and further exploration of emotions, it has the potential to be even more impactful. Keep up the great work and continue to share your thought-provoking writing!
