Resolutions be Damned

In lands afar and realms so wide,

Through bustling streets and countryside,

I roam and wander, seek and stride,

Yet, within, the same me resides.

Across the oceans, under skies so vast,

In cities bright, shadows they cast,

Desire to grow persist, is there a hope?

Through changing scenes that fly by fast,

It's the same me, full of failings, anchored to the past.

In mirrored lakes, under sun's keen eye,

I gaze and ponder, question why,

I strive, I strive to a better self!

Despite the where, the when, the sigh,

It's me and shadow unchanged, no matter how I try.

Through forests deep and mountains tall,

In silent whispers, I hear the call,

Resolutions made, faults explor’d, therapists seen,

But in each jolt, through every hall,

The same meager me echoes, through rise and fall.

Change, a specter, distant and coy,

Eludes my grasp, a fleeting joy,

Is it the me that's just a ploy,

A constant second rate traveler, life's own envoy?

Yet in this toil, I start to see,

The same me holds a grip of constancy,

A core too rooted, firm to be free,

A strength or a tiring sameness, a steadfast tree.

So, here I stand, in me, the same,

In every whisper of my name,

I strive, I strive to a better self!

In every land, the eternal flame,

Of me, unchanged, yet not the same.

For in each place, through time and space,

I gather hues at my own plodding pace,

The same me, yes, without grace,

In the constant me, the world leaves its trace.

In every step, in each new dawn,

I carry me, but I travel on,

I strive, I strive to a better self!

For though the core of me isn't gone,

With each wasted day, a new layer is sewn.

So, here's to me, unchanging, yet new,

A paradox, both false and true,

Resolutions to be a-new be damn’d, my lot is cast,

In every land, under every hue,

It's the same me, nev’r changing in view.

Mani S. Kavuru

Words and writing have always interested me, but the transition now is from scientific writing (which is based on logic and the rational) to a more emotive, lyrical form. At present this remains an experiment to see if I can strike the right tone, elicit a desired effect, etc. Full disclosure: I have been utilizing chatGPT as an "assistant"; I provide the prompts, edit extensively, yet the structure is provided by my assistant. I take full responsibility for the end result. Not that dissimilar to work on a scientific project in the lab, etc. more…
