No bull(noble)

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

All this time the good seeds planted,
Within our fertile minds

Race with the sands Of the hourglass
Within our flesh and bones

At such a blinding pace Reminders,
all the weeds of our disgrace

Act to retard our forward progress
Going nowhere fast

Burn away the clouds of evolution
As extinction erases yet another

Group of unfortunates’ presence
From the table of the living

Sweeps them
DEAD into past

ALL ABOARD!!!

Another trainload of fools,
Headed out the station to prospect fool’s gold,

(Pyrite to all you amateur geologists)

Leaving nary a trace
But a formula for change

For those remaining
with the variable mind

Its engine powerful,
snorting violently,

charged
Like a wild bull

circling a wounded rival
idling , ready for the next contest,

revving up …then bellowing out
the challenge, to the skillful,

the brave, the foolish Or unwary,
to those of you more scholarly than foolish,

candidates… more/less
survivors,

To defeat the beast
and taste the beef

Season its meat
and turn it slowly in the fire…

And those left over with some chance/potential
Due to luck, skill, guile, or force of will,

Ancestral guidance,
purveyance become the wise

Once naïve students of keen strategy with wit,
eager to survive

even pretenders seeking the throne
To the lucky few Bad asses,

who for some stroke
Of pluck, odd circumstance, or genius

Survived for the appearance of one
Who has aged well, done fair

as anyone can tell…
Fears not man… nor beast

Studies religion and politics, just enough
To have learned the dirty tricks

Suffers from a tendency for playing tricks
On the foolish, arrogant and hypocrites

Some like to belittle older people
Because they never got the memo

They simply don’t understand

All the rough and tough, blokes
Who learned the ropes as young folk,

Learned to gain the upper hand,
evolving

beyond hitting hard things
with their faces, instead

Using their head to understand…
Not just to break things,

break them down to pieces
And build them up again,

to a better plan

Snow on the mountain,
a silver mane

A crown of wisdom…
as opposed to an old fool,

No matter how many times of
Getting knocked down,

understanding,
The root of the changing dimensions…

Those who have seen it all before

When the wild bull came,
they jumped the fence

Knowing it’s better
to be smarter, than strong

Better to be alive…
a wiser survivor

Than to be a daredevil
dead wrong

And when the right answer
comes to you

Then, make your move …
intelligent minds

Prefer the view
from the ground up

Unless, until…
time’s up

And turns the table
on the unbeatable foe

Someday to find our place
among them who know…

How to get the job done
better,

beyond the bull

(that’s no missed steak)
