If You Must Know

George Hay 1961 (Pittsburgh Pa)

through fading thought I ache to write
to escape this burden of mindless plight
to unwind these paths I've blindly paved
with gilded verse and in no way saved
I'll grasp those words lost deep inside
to seek the memory of times I've cried
a revealing touch poised upon my mind
I'll yearn those tears I'll never find
but ease my longing this way somehow
a chance to heal with this one vow
to refute the hurt with deep disdain
that it might not spoil life's last refrain
so when the nights upon me pall
I'll find my peace within my fall
And know that things not done in spite
but pure of heart I thought were right
so believing that towards final rest
I'll close my eyes having done my best.
