Blood Moon Passage

George Hay 1961 (Pittsburgh Pa)

nameless poets revel in the moons passage.
once the light of romance and longing,
this night, their muse mocks them,
casting verses of cruel silent menace
beneath the sheen of the blood moon.

clouds shaded by its luminescence,
drift ominously while elongated shadows,
cover the maidens steps within their steady creep.
aimless, she wanders unfettered, unsteady
into its soothing, silvery clutch.

the sepia night, colored in moonlit tint,
falsely promises her sanctuary
beyond the forests primal canopy.
she pauses at the wooded edge unsure,
yet bidden into the secluded clearing.

upon her knees, bathed in soundless grace,
moonbeams pierce and enlighten her.
draped in sacred vestments, she rises.
upon the granite altar she is led,
her blood to let, the moonlight cleansed.
