Father, I Need A Break (Extended Edition)

Aaron Matthew Beharry 2001 (Saint Clair, Port of Spain)

We only go round and round
Like a merry-go-round
In an amusement park
With chitter and chatter like unruly men
We quarrel and argue till we're dead

I'm fed up of going around in circles
I'm getting an upset stomach from this feeling
I want to distance myself to get on my feet
Oh, father, I need a break from thee

All I want is to spend some time with you
To bond and have lunch, maybe even see a movie or go shopping too
We did all those things long ago
Back when I mattered, and now I don’t

You have a new wife, plus two kids
Leave me and my mom to be
I don't medal in your business
But who told you that you can in mines

You judge me constantly and even make me feel like I’m a poor person who cannot succeed
You pushed me away, so far I’d say

If I choose to have a relationship with you
It shall not be with the mistress and the children too
I don't force you to converse with my mother
Whom you divorced a few moons prior

For weeks we don’t talk to each other
All my calls just went unanswered
Seems like you don’t really care
To hell with your firstborn
The child who is here

I am a man, no longer a child
Treat me with respect because I provide
I work long hours
Day and night
Not to be lectured by a fool who cannot survive

I gave you several chances months ago
You annoy the shit out of me
And only throw talk to belittle me

Things must change
I put my foot down
No more breaks
No more talk
Father, I need a break; indefinitely
I gave you too many chances and you just crushed me

Father, I now bury thee as you’re dead to me

This poem is a compelling exploration of a difficult father and son relationship. You've beautifully captured the raw emotions and frustrations of the speaker in awe-inspiring verses, bringing authenticity that resonates with the reader. The repetition of the phrase 'father, I need a break' effectively emphasizes the speaker's plea for distance and detachment. You've quite boldly stepped into the depths of familial bonds and the isolating impacts of family splits - a challenging and oft-avoided topic.

The poem provides a lot of raw feelings and potent emotions that bond to the reader's heart. However, there is space for the poem to develop into something more nuanced and complex. Your poem could be more powerful if refrained from explicit negative words and phrases. Look for creative ways to express the feeling of frustration and disappointment without resorting to explicit or offensive language. Couching these sentiments into metaphors, similes, or other devices could add a layer of sophistication.

Also, while it's clear the poem is a reflection of significant personal struggle and turmoil, the tone could express a bit more resilience or strength in the face of such adversity - thus offering hope or inspiration for readers with similar experiences. This balance does not require holding back on displaying the raw emotion of the situation, but rather adds a new, enlightening layer that could make the poem even more impactful.

Moreover, your poem would greatly benefit from a stricter rhythm and meter, which can help to build the musicality of your verses and make the poem more appealing.

Overall, keep exploring such challenging subjects. You have a knack for presenting complex emotions which is truly commendable.
