100,000 Years
Tammie Swinehart 1974 (Mooresville, IN)
100,000 YEARS
In the depths of time's vast sea,
A tale unfolds, of mystery,
A hundred thousand years ago,
When Earth was young, and life did grow.
The world was wild, untamed, and free,
With ancient forests, as far as eyes could see,
Majestic creatures roamed the land,
In harmony with nature's hand.
The glaciers danced, their icy waltz,
Leaving marks upon the earth's expanse,
Mountains rose, and valleys sank,
A landscape shaped, as ages spanked.
From early man to modern minds,
A tapestry of human kinds,
In caves, they painted dreams in hues,
From art to tools, their skills they'd use.
Through struggles, triumphs, and fears,
A hundred thousand years of tears,
Civilizations would rise and fall,
Leaving remnants for us to recall.
From pyramids to grand empires,
Innovations sparked creative fires,
Philosophies, religions, and art,
Leaving imprints on every heart.
Wars were fought, and peace was sought,
As time's eternal dance was wrought,
The march of progress moved ahead,
As dreams and visions were widespread.
Across the ages, tales were spun,
Of heroes brave and battles won,
Legends told from age to age,
In history's grand, eternal stage.
And as we gaze back through the years,
Reflecting on joys, sorrows, and tears,
A hundred thousand years' embrace,
We stand as one, a human race.
So let us cherish, with open hearts,
The lessons learned, the wisdom's sparks,
For every moment, past to now,
Has shaped the path on which we plow.
A hundred thousand years have passed,
Yet time's vast story still holds fast,
As we move forward, hand in hand,
Continuing on this ancient land.
About this poem
The idea for this poem came from my daughter. When she was 4, she was looking at some old family photos. Some that were passed down from my mother were in black and white. As she was looking at these, as well as the photos with color, I could see the wheels in her head turning. In her little serious voice, she says to me "Mommy, was I alive when there was no color?" So, I briefly explained to her that there was always color, just old cameras were not capable of taking colored pics etc. etc. etc. So, she's listening to me, and thinking about what I am telling her and says to me "Wow, that must have been 100,000 years ago." more »
