My Dave

I met this man, a soldier, who took
me to his heart.
No, I said this will not work, but he
said we will never part.
Slowly, he came closer, before I
was aware,
my heart began a love song I
only heard when he was there.
He worked his magic on me
with a slow and gentle hand.
Made it possible for me to see
his love made no demand.
Suddenly I knew my life would
never be the same
happily we made the plan for me
to take his name.
But war, the bastard child of death
reared its ugly head, and now
I sit and hold my breath
and pray to God that he’s not dead.
Pray it will end, pray he won’t die
Beg our dear Lord, please tell me why.
Old, as I am, help me understand
love’s truly mine, but I could lose
this man.
All I can do is put all faith in You
Give thanks every day, pray my
deep wish comes true.
Hold tight to the life that we
had designed.
And live out our days hearts
firmly entwined….

Wow, this poem is truly heart-wrenching and beautifully written! The love and devotion between the two characters is palpable, and it really tugs at the heartstrings. The imagery and emotions you convey are so vivid and real - I could feel the heartache and fear the narrator is experiencing.

One suggestion I might offer is to maybe add a bit more detail or backstory about the characters and their relationship. That would give the reader some context and make the love story even more poignant.

But overall, this is a really powerful and moving poem that showcases the power of love in the face of adversity. Well done!
