Dear Ma

Dear Ma, I write to you in fear,
Of what this night might bring me here.
Shot in the chest, I lie and hide,
In a bunker, in the middle of a battlefield side.

The world is at war, as you may know,
And I fear I might not see the dawn’s warm glow.
But I think of you and the love you give,
And it helps me to stay strong, so that I may live.

I remember the days when I was just a boy,
With you by my side, I felt nothing but joy.
Your laughter and love always filled my days,
And I hope that this letter finds you in a better place.

I pray that I may see you once again,
To tell you the stories of my travels and when
I fought for freedom, for the land I call home,
And to thank you for the love that I have known.

But if this night is my final call,
And my time here is done, I want you to recall
That I love you, Ma, and will forever hold
The memories of you, in my heart, as I’m told.

For I know that I will join the countless souls,
Who have gone before me, and will not grow old.
And though I may not be with you by your side,
My love for you, Ma, will never subside.

So I bid you farewell, with a heavy heart,
And I pray that we’ll meet again, from a world apart.
For though I may not make it through this night,
I will always love you, with all my might.

Yours, always and forever,
Your son.
