Barren Fig Trees

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

O Lord, the things that we’ve put You through,
Can’t compare to the grace that you’ve shown to the few.

The grace and the mercy for all who believe.
As the world’s religions just attempt to deceive.

They fight with each other over trivial things.
Can salvation be lost or is it never ending?

And if it is lost can you receive it again?
All these quarrels are started by the emptiest of men.

They claim to be filled with the Spirit of Truth.
But I can’t find the evidence; they offer no proof!

You can tell all the trees by the fruit they produce!
Barren limbs; filled with leaves, they just seek to seduce!

Because they can’t offer food that the hungry might eat,
Soon they’ll wither away and their end won’t be sweet!
