Drunken Hymn

Riaan Smit 1988 (Windhoek)

I’m walking down this darkened street
My thoughts are following my
I can’t change the picture in my mind
To a frame that reminds me of a better time
I trip over myself but I don’t know if its intentional
I would pull myself up but I really want to stay
The people walking by are truly confrontational
I just want to wake up in a sober day

I would stop someone to ask but they don’t know whoever could
These are my problems there’s no reason they should
I think I may be losing my mind
I was recently speaking to a friend of mine

Oh barmen my friend my priest, my pope
I got a disease you’ve got the antidote
You’re the only one who’s blessings bring me hope
The next best thing I can count on is dope

So brother give me something to quench my dying thirst
The guy here next to me wants two, but bring me mine first
My questions are answers blurred in a haze I can’t see
Of jack Daniels, the captain, and his first mate jimmy beam

So I asked my friend all the questions could ask,
and I never heard anyone reply oh so fast
This man had everything that man a man could need
A humour, and an intellect and a spirituality
When he asked me my questions I never really replied,
I ducked the questions, changed the topics, but mostly I lied
Oh barmen my friend my priest, my pope
I got a disease you’ve got the antidote
You’re the only one who’s blessings bring me hope
The next best thing I can count on is dope

So brother give me something to quench my dying thirst
The guy here next to me wants to too, but bring me mind first
My questions are answers blurred in a haze I can’t see
Of jack Daniels, the captain, and his first mate jimmy beam
