Paratroopers

The aircraft rumbled as the engines roared loud:

metallic stallions in the fleecy white clouds.

The rickety framework, squeaking and groaning,

as armored men sat, sweating and waiting.

Suddenly the ramp swung open,

as the jumpmaster rose and beckoned,

his grumbling men, all weary and spent,

to finally make their dreaded descent.

Rows of seatbelts came unbuckled,

one by one the troopers shuffled,

hoofing toward that windy gate,

where down below they'll their fate.

And as they leaped into the sky,

they felt as if they'd never die.

They gave no thought to their demise,

because they eyed a bigger prize.

Hello from the deep blue sky...

About this poem

A tribute to those who do what many people won't do: jump out of a perfectly functioning aircraft to an uncertain fate.
