Analysis of I've Been With Me So Long

I've been with me so long though I can't remember when
I first saw a whippoorwill or listened to a wren.

Did I once marvel at the sight of softly falling snow?
Did I once stand in spellbound awe of rhythmic surfs below?

I've traveled far and wide though I can't recall each land
I first took eager steps or felt the foreign sand.

Did I once startle by reports presented on the news?
Did I once shrink from the horrors of tales that just abuse?

I've played hard to compete though I can't revive the time
I first won a trophy or why it seemed sublime.

Did I once wonder at the taste of warm and tender lips?
Did I once thrill to liquid moves of undulating hips?

I've been with me so long though I can't remember when
I first earned my deep trust or became my own best friend.
