Analysis of The Great Divide

“The Great Divide”

We felt the rumblings
unaware
the crack would be
so wide, so deep

Faults fracture,
fissures fester
toxic venoms
through us seep

We sound alarms
as children cry
and hope and pray
relief comes faster

Odds rise against
our humble pleas
to save us all
from war’s disaster

We remember
days much kinder,
filled with empathy
and love

In pit of darkness
looking up,
we search for light
in heavens above

We look to helpers,
begging for
their knowledge, wisdom
and their guidance

To banish evil
from the world
restoring peace,
Earthly alliance

Perhaps in time
all wounds will heal,
compassion fill
the great divide

But for now-
innocent souls
cruelly sacrificed,
still die

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
