Sunset”

“Sunset”

sun star balanced
on sea and sky
your honeyed glow
on jeweled canvas
mesmerizes me
suddenly you teeter
you fall slowly, then quickly,
swallowed by night visitors
who have come for you-
I lower my lids
upon the darkness
to dream your passion-
before sleep takes me
you are there…
spherical silhouette
spirited light
fire-dancing
before my shuttered eyes

About this poem

Although written about a beautiful sunset I had recently seen, it can be read as a metaphor for admiration and loss of someone we loved, reflecting their strong spirit that shows itself to us when we least expect it.

Susan Mayer Brumel

I am a retired hospice social worker, who began writing poems about 2 years ago. I am married, a mom of two sons, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and grandma of two grandchildren who are the loves of my life. A lover of all animals and most people, I enjoy spending time in nature, long walks, and reading Pablo Neruda, Blake, William Carlos Williams, James Joyce, Mary Oliver, Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Leonard Cohen, and more. Baudelaire tells us to ‘be drunk’ on something every day; I am drunk on poetry and intend never to be sober! more…
