Neil McLeod 1947 (Oxford)

For my son who fell asleep Holding a knightly pose.

Here lies Sir Oliver ensconced
His knightly dignity preserved
In comfort couched upon his stuffed sarcophagus
When sleep bent down and closed his lids.

In effigy transported to the ethereal battleground
Where courtly garbed and stoutly helmed
He wields his trusty sword
A Christian defying all his foes.

We speak in reverent undertones
Fearing to sacrilegiously disturb his rest
To stir the fervor in his breast
With untimely wakefulness.
