Nightmare #3: A Great Fox

Curious fox,
what brings you to these fevered dreams?
Here you stand,
proud and bold,
honouring your ancestors of old
with your coat shining brighter
then the crimson sun.
What mockery is this
in which I may sit so close
to a god of the evergreens
yet have my caresses be beckoned away
by a maddening snarl?
Are you a messenger,
come to bring me good fortune
of times down the line?
or are you an omen,
a warning to keep at bay
my self-searching soul.
