Laid to rest

The rifles fire over my head.
Not sure why I am not dead.
Surrounded by the stink of fear.
I've watched my friends die here.

The war will go on without them.
But there is no glorious battle hymn.
Only soldiers doing what they must.
For fear of losing their comrades trust.

I grab my weapon and start to run.
Kids playing video games think this is fun.
But this is no game for me.
I am losing my sanity.

And when I am finally laid to rest.
I sure hope I can pass Gods test.
The lord must know how hard I tried.
And for those I have killed I've even cried.
