In Essence

Lightning flashes
upon the black, desolate
skyline, like spirituality
on the tongue
of an atheist:
mocking both
in a single word,
one expression.
One bolt of life
shoots down,
waking up all that
lay asleep,
if only for
a moment’s time.
As we watch
the now vivid sky,
your fingers curl
under mine,
reminding me that
we’re still alive.
