Icarus (For Insects)
We've bastardized the American Dream
The remnants of which is now
Nothing more than a ponzi scheme
Our glorious democratic process
Has been reduced to particular interest groups
Because we've forgotten that
Specialization is for insects
Meanwhile, incest between liberty and justice
runs rampant --
And the ants are marching on...
God can't be mentioned in schools
But any fool with two cents
And a YouTube account
Can spout some absurdity
As social commentary
And have it accepted as gospel truth
"All in the name of progress"...right?
We, the people:
The pundits of personal opinion
And Idolaters of infomania
Are left with an indelible stain
On the inside of our eyelids
That effects our cranium's capacity
For true knowledge
We're so cool with so-so
That having a brain is B
And mediocre is so dope
That fame and infamy are one
And the same thing
Icarus' wings are back in fashion
Which means that it won't be long now
Before it all comes crashing down
History's lessons often go unaddressed
Because we write it down in a book
And tuck it away on a shelf
Believing it to be handily dealt with
Oh, how easily we forget
The stealth of the human condition
The battle of attrition
Was lost generations ago
When we chose appetite over wisdom
We've collectively slit the throat of contrition
And its blood runs deep
Beneath the floorboard cracks
But, then again --
Hindsight is only 20/20
When we remember that the way up is down
And have the wherewithal and courage
To look back
