Hardened Heart

What once was soft is now hard as stone,
weary and damaged and all alone.
It once held a love that seemed so true,
now it's colors are black and blue.

Instead of repair, it seeks to hide,
afraid to mend a damaged pride.
Anger and bitterness now replace,
where love once filled the space.

Is it the long and troublesome strife,
that choked out love and all of the life?
Is it the wrong that has been done,
that has darkened even the sun?

Forgiveness and mercy were easily found.
Now from them, there is no sound.
The wrong and all of the pain,
has now placed love under a strain.

It cannot look at what it once knew,
after all the hurt its been through.
It once looked upon all of the good.
Now resentment replaces where love once stood.

What weighs so heavy on the heart,
that makes the hardness begin to start?
It needs new life to begin to pardon,
and soften what has been so hardened.
