A Sugar Glider
Your big, black eyes
Stare at me with everything
I will never know.
Your fur mangled
From your sickly negligence,
Your ears drooping
With the deathly knowledge.
How could you have know
That today would be the day
Tears would spring
From all our eyes?
Did you know
When you left
Your exotic country?
Did it come to you
When your little ones
Were harvested and sold?
Even now,
On your last breath,
You know I feel responsible,
For I put you behind bars,
Held you in that pouch,
And kept you for my own.
Today your night eyes close,
You know it to be so.
Your white underneath finally will show,
I’ll cry for you, mourn for you,
Buried in the backyard.
Let me live out your example
Before Death does take me too.
