The Dream

The Dream

I dreamt he was running
His head kicked way back
His arms pumping fast
Something on his track

His sister’s hand tight
They run and they run
Why are they running
They’re not running for fun

I’m scared and I feel it
Even in my deep sleep
What is behind them
He takes a big leap

He slides down a hill
His sister in tow
They slam on the surface
To the hard ground below

But it’s not what’s behind them
That scares me to death
It’s simply him running
He don’t have the breath

I scream and I cry
And beg him to stop
Your heart cannot take it
Your body will drop

And then he collapses
In terror and pant
He wanted to run
Even though he just can’t

Why did he do it
He knows he can’t run
Why did he risk it
He thought it’d be fun

“Oh my God” he cries out
As reality hits
I shouldn’t have run
He finally admits

And then I awoke
And the panic ensued
But he’s safe in his bed
And don’t have a clue

Of the pain that I feel
In my deep sleep
The fear in my heart
In private I keep

I take it for granted
The health I was given
A body that runs
That’s strong and driven

I wish he could have it
I’d give it to him
So he could run too
And not feel so grim

Grim and tired
His earthly life is
Dragging and dreaded
Is just how he lives

I love when he’s perky
Though rare it may be
I love when he smiles
But it’s foreign to me

One day I know
He’ll be running with me
On streets of gold
With Jesus we’ll be

We’ll run miles and miles
In the glory of God
With air in our lungs
And lightness in trod

We’ll run miles and miles
Through streets of pure gold
And admire all the colors
And never grow old

His lips will be pink
His fingernails too
His toes filled with color
And never again blue

We’ll run on forever
His sister joins too
Through all of the colors
But none of them blue

We’ll run without fear
Or exhaustion for him
All will be bright
No colors dim

We’ll run and we’ll run
No dream it will be
We’ll run on forever
Into eternity
