RATHER LATE

RATHER LATE
I stopped when I saw him sitting there
Looking beyond tired, ragged, worn
Like he was lost, without a prayer
He wore an old coat patched and torn
I asked, sir can I help you today?
He replied, only if you think you can pray

I sat beside him, we bowed heads right there
I said, God I lift my brother up to you.
I watched him, he was shaken by the prayer
When I finished, I asked, is that all I can do
He replied, Son you just shook hells very gate
Now head on home, it's getting rather late

The next time I saw him, he was rather ill
We went to the hospital, too late I found
I think a lot about that prayer still
When the battle just gets me down
Did he find the answers, life seemed to hide
In that last chance, what did he decide?

He was buried with honors, but no one came
A folded flag they had no one there to give
I wonder who besides me even knows his name
Was an empty grave side, a memory he live
So I sat there beside him, said a little prayer
God, I prayed, welcome Don home up there

And as I prayed I cried out in my pain
Oh God lift me from the battle I fight
I know God my faith’ s not in vain
May I be found righteous in Your sight
Now I write our tale, our faith I relate
Until God says come on home, it's rather late
Amen

About this poem

Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” 13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity Joel 2:12-13
