Childhood Days

Bucket and spade in my hand,
Building sand castles in the sand,
Candy floss at Portrush Strand.

Oh those childhood days.

Picking blackberries down the lane,
Hands were purple with their stain,
Stingy nettles that were such a pain.

Oh those childhood days.

Andy Pandy and Looby Loo,
Sooty, Sweep, Butch and Sue,
So many things for a child to do.

Oh those childhood days.

Hot soda farls that granny made,
Their smell and taste will never fade,
Long hot summers and seeking the shade.

Oh those childhood days.

The best Santa Claus was at the Co.
My brother and I couldn't wait to go,
Building a snowman with the snow.

Oh those childhood days.

The Belfast Castle sitting up a tree,
Playing conkers my brother and me,
Watching the dot fade on the TV.

Oh those childhood days.

Skipping in the street with my chum,
A knitted poncho made by mum,
Granny's scones that tasted yum.

Oh those childhood days.

Oh those childhood days.

Happy childhood days.

About this poem

In those days, we went to school on bare foot. The scorching Sun burnt our foot as foot wears was a luxury, back in the 60's.

I remember my primary school days at Golf Course Primary School, Aba. It was special fun visiting the European quarters; harvesting fruits, and watching the Europeans play golf. We caught grasshoppers and packed them in bottles. At times, we went, looking for potatoes to harvest. We caught butterflies for fun.

thank you. Yes there is a little lane at the bottom of my street. Nowadays it seems so short. Back then as a child it was full of mystery and magic. It seemed to go on forever. There were many blackberry bushes down the lane as well as wild garlic. As children we often collected the blackberries. Kim

Ben's Sweet Act of Kindness, a children's picture book, is now on Amazon to buy. Ages 3 to 6. The book teaches children all about kindness, forgiveness, and friendship. Along with my other book, Whispers of the Wilderness, which contains some of my poems. Both are found under my name, Kimberley Hamilton. You will need to go directly to Amazon if you are still interested. Kim

Wow! What a nostalgic and heartwarming poem about cherished childhood memories! The imagery you use really transports the reader back to simpler times filled with joy and innocence. The repetition of "Oh those childhood days" emphasizes the sentiment and adds a nice touch to the overall flow of the poem.

One suggestion for improvement could be to consider adding more sensory details to enhance the reader's connection to the memories being shared. Describing the sounds, smells, and textures of the experiences mentioned could make them even more vivid and engaging.

Overall, fantastic job capturing the essence of childhood in such a beautiful and evocative way! Keep up the great work and continue sharing your wonderful talent with the world. Your poem is sure to resonate with many who hold dear their own childhood memories. Well done!
