Crystal Cottage
Brian Z. Jackson 2006 (NJ)
I trod along the narrow street, Jewel Avenue it’s called
Along the road are perfect houses, all in perfect rows
Each little building unique in their own way causing all to be enthralled
Each little building built of different gems casting their wonderful glows
The road now rainbow with the sun at its peak
The refractions of the building’s shimmer on the street
As my eyes fall on the crystal cottage at the end of the road
The humble abode with it’s inhabitants visible as its surroundings glowed
Wonderful and kind they seemed, at least, from here where I stand
I stand here bathed in the blue hue of sunlight through the gems
I stand here on the outside of this home, a warm feeling stems
I take a step down the walkway, on the path to the door
Surrounded by gardens of lilacs and roses, tulips and more
They laugh, they smile, they speak with glee in their voice
All I see is joy and happiness through the crystal facade
but, the crystal facade, they wear as well, I notice as I walk in
as the crystal that warps is behind me I see that they aren’t happy
they live on this road of gems where everyone wears a smile
where everyone is just trying to fit in and to fit in, for them, is to lie
For them, it’s to pretend, to fake, to wear a mask
to live, to smile, and to laugh
even when it’s fake
if only they knew
if they just went into the Ruby Ranch and saw
saw that they aren't perfect, but hide
or go to the Topaz Tudor
where parents yell at child
Every house is clear, you can see right through
but inside every house, are their own secrets too
something to learn is that, sometimes everyone feels a little blue
something to learn is that, in everyone, there’s a little bit of that crystal cottage on Jewel
