Rest Stop Crows

We are here to eat and you are
here to see what we're eating.

It is a sunny and muggy day as weary
travelers unpack picnic provisions.

You are not the crows of Hitchcock,
for those were ravens not crows.

You are not the crows of Castaneda,
for there are no Don Juans here to teach.

And you are not the crows of Shakespeare,
for MacBeth never picnics at rest stops.

You are the crows of half-eaten Cheetos
and Doritos and convenience store burritos.

Rest stop crows never rest. They are
loiterers of litter now and for evermore.

About this poem

Seeing crows picking at discarded fast-food bags at a highway rest stop inspired me to compare them with the crows of literature and lore.
