Alcohol and Drugs Saved My Life

Youth was a gateway to my awakening,
As I began to conceive the lie.
When I believed I was going to live forever,
Was the day I began to die.

Night after night I sought its destruction,
Partying away without any shame,
Abusing my mind, moreover my body,
Liquor and drugs were the game.

Staying out for days, feeding the sickness,
Snorting and drinking until morning light,
No sense of myself until it all came down,
When fear kept me up through the night.

My head spun around to wake me up fast,
To cravings I knew couldn't fill me
I ignored and defied until I ceased to function,
Is when I realized my habits would kill me.

That was the night when death spoke loudly --
"Enough is enough, it's time to convene."
My heartbeat fired a most frightful warning,
When I knew it was time to come clean.

I'd fallen down sick, feeling under the weather
When my arrogance finally bit me.
Earth spun around when my head met the ground,
As the dog days of youth finally hit me.

The fear was consuming and where had I been,
Before I'd proclaimed immortality,
On the day when living became my new drug,
Reborn by my own mortality.

This poem hit home for me. It sums up my late childhood years into being a teenager. Now in my 40's I still struggle with sobriety.
