Phone Number (A Tale Of Back In The Day)

Back in the days, oh what a struggle it was,
To get a girl's phone number, oh the buzz.
No Tinder or Snapchat, just old-fashioned ways,
Of trying to woo her, in those bygone days.

You'd spot a pretty girl, across the room,
Heart racing, palms sweaty, impending doom.
You'd muster up courage, approach with a smile,
But deep down inside, you were in denial.

"Excuse me, miss, may I have your number please?"
You'd ask, hoping she'd say yes with ease.
But oh, the rejection, the crushing blow,
She'd politely decline, and off you'd go.

You'd try again, with a different approach,
Maybe a joke or a compliment, to encroach.
But alas, the result was often the same,
No digits for you, just a sense of shame.

You'd resort to desperate measures, my friend,
Writing your number on a napkin, to send.
But she'd toss it away, without a second thought,
Leaving you wondering, what you had sought.

And then came the era of the landline phone,
A glimmer of hope, a chance to atone.
You'd dial her number, heart pounding in your chest,
Praying she'd answer, and not put you to the test.

But more often than not, her dad would pick up,
And you'd stumble over words, like a clumsy pup.
He'd ask who you were, and what you wanted,
And you'd stammer and stutter, feeling haunted.

Oh, the struggle was real, back in the day,
To get a girl's number, in a smooth, suave way.
But looking back now, with a laugh and a grin,
It was all part of the game, the chase, the win.

So cherish those memories, of awkward attempts,
Of fumbling and stumbling, with good intent.
For in the end, it's the journey that's fun,
And the lessons learned, when all is said and done.
