But What Happens to the Merry?

Is it only in December
under mistletoe and vine
that we host a celebration
feast at table, drink the wine?
Pick up phone and make the calls,
send the cards and feed the poor,
slow down hustle of the living,
wish of peace forevermore.
But what happens to the merry
after Christmas Day has passed?
In a box the tree lights slumber
and the pine tree doesn’t last.
We return to daily living.
Pick up speed just like before.
No more feasting at the table.
No more wreath upon the door.
In our hearts are we all yearning
to hang on to merry essence?
For it’s memory can linger
more than that of Christmas presents.
But the cards must do the waiting,
so must friends afar and near.
Starts the countdown till the merry
comes to visit us next year.
