Life As A Runaway
Robert Catron 1963 (Kansas)
This is a life that is unlike any other,
On the streets - you have no real friends or a mother.
Kids think it's great to be out all night on the street,
Until they end up raped, hooked on drugs, or shot to death on the concrete.
Kids find it funny to steal and run out of sight,
Until they're left crying and shivering on a cold winters night.
I lived on the streets for 3 years and none of it was any fun,
You fight for your life, your food, your place to sleep, or you just run.
The streets are a nightmare they'll scare you if they can try,
Who will save you when you're lying there freezing to death ready to die?
I watched kids starve to death and I watched them freeze to death too,
Take my advice - stay home where it's warm with love and food - have you no clue?
The streets never give up their victims because there's no easy way out,
You'll go hungry without mercy - it won't help to cry or pout.
I've seen boys end up dead from gangs - I've seen girls sell their bodies as whores,
There are no safe places, no beaches, and no shores.
Out on the streets you don't have many choices if you want to survive,
You'll do things that come out of your worst nightmares - just to stay alive.
And if you wind up in jail - it can be even worse inside of there,
The people in there have nothing to loose - hurting you - they'll do it on a dare.
Once you've gotten a record - on you- life closes it's doors.
I had to eat out of trash cans as a way to keep alive,
Other times I went days without food or water - I could barely survive.
The streets are not a joke - they will rip you to pieces and spit out the parts,
I've seen it take kind and caring people and watched it make them stab themselves in their hearts.
You may think you're tough or you're a big baller - let me tell you you're lying to yourself,
I've seen so many kids like you end up taking their own lives ending up on a cold shelf.
So next time you think of running away and living on the streets cause it's too tough at home,
Be ready to die- because it can happen when you're out where the Devil does roam!
