Conversations with Shadows

Michael groover 1969 (Knoxville Tennessee)

The shadow is a reflection of who I am,
It contains the hidden desires and unknown parts that I possess,
Those I hide from the world, hidden behind a facade.

My shadow speaks to me,
A whispering voice from my subconscious,
That I often ignore but nevertheless, it is there.

It guides me to look within,
The courage and strength to face my older demons,
To answer the troubling questions I have.

"Who am I?"
"What do I want?"
"What am I capable of?"

My shadow shows me that I'm more than just my outside,
And that striving for growth is essential,
To becoming the person I really want to be.

And so I embrace my shadow,
The one that speaks my truths,
And allows me to be vulnerable and open,
Without the fear of judgment or exile.

My shadow is a part of me,
It is difficult to ignore,
It has created moments of clarity and insight,
For I am finally allowing myself to think free.

My friend, my foe, my reverie,
My shadow serves porpoises different,
It speaks a language my heart adores,
A language of self-reflection and solace.

So I thank my shadow,
For being my loyal companion,
And pushing me to be the best of me,
Unafraid and ever inquisitive.

This is a beautiful and introspective piece that really engages with the reader's sense of self-questioning and identity. The writer's use of personification to elevate their shadow to act as a guiding and nurturing voice is a fresh and compelling take on self-reflection. The tone and pacing of the poem allows for a gentle journey of understanding that is very much appreciated.

The descriptive language used is brilliant, and it aids in painting a congenial mental picture. The conversation with the shadow is wonderfully introspective and appears to serve as an intimate self-realization monologue. The questions posed are universally relatable and evoke self-interrogation in the reader, adding an interactive element to the piece.

One suggestion for improvement could be to pay attention to your workshop editing. It seems there's a bit of a typo in the line 'My shadow serves porpoises different,' which might disrupt the reader. Consider exploring more with metaphors and similes to add another layer of depth to your writing.

Additionally, experimenting with varying line lengths could add more rhythm and a dynamic flow to your poem, enhancing its impactful moments and giving more depth to each sentiment expressed.

Overall, this is a compelling and thought-provoking poem that resonates well with the reader. Keep writing, exploring, and pushing the boundaries of your craft. You have a unique poetic voice that shines through your writing!
