I Heard a Voice

I Heard a Voice
By Chris Commodore © 2004

High in the sky, this twinkling silvery star,
Beacons me come to Nature’s hideaway.
What wretched fate compels you stay so far?
Man stop your games and come up here to stay.

Where nights are days laid out in silken lace,
Here, sunny bright smiles filter breathing air.
As you can see, I live in heavenly grace,
Where souls survive content without a fear.

So, I still doubting, shout out: “Is God there?
Is my spot set, well-secured at the gate;
Is the great kingdom near there where you are;
Must I come now or when I’m termed the late?

First use that guide as you the prophets told.
You’ll find the realm if earthly flight is right.
Ride on your mind to join the heavenly fold,
And take your place in this here azure bright.

Though puzzled by the beaconing asteroid,
I pondered hard the inner voice of self.
I vowed to heed the calling from the void,
Lest I should miss the voice of God himself.

About this poem

Lying in a small pasture near a barn in the summer of 2004 and looking up into the brightly-stared heavens. As I meditated on the scene, I was inspired to write "I Heard a Voice."
