Coming of Age

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

Where is your heart?

You who are raised on love

resistant to the stains of hatred and brutality

able to shake off

retribution

of those who

are guilty

seeking to paint their crimes

upon your spirit-soul

Those
whose views

are based upon

slight of hand

and demands
that you

conform

to a higher standard
than

Jesus

Those
whose views

cast shade on every step of progress

made to the process

of humanity

those
whose vanity

precedes

thoughtful conversation...

those
who are not yet

lost

yet
not, yet

found

as we

all

come of age

we must embrace

who we are

all... of it

our strengths

are

our weaknesses

abandon
the false pride

our defense
against

discovery

of who we are

all
of us

must
first strip away

the layers of clay

of a mask

we entertain ourselves with

and be...

we

the people
