In This Dark Place

Adam Roy Carrigan 1985 (Winnipeg, MB)

In this dark place I am not afraid
I contemplate life's wonderful escapades
I know better times are on the way
Because would I even be alive if hope fades?

I tend to smile when the sun shines bright
And I'm seemingly happy to the people outside
But when I return home to unwind
The darkness is there to help me hide

To me it doesn't feel wrong that I am still alone
Because most times I do not care
Society might brand me awkward or weird
But maybe they shouldn't stop to stare

If the wonders vanish when the truth is revealed
There really weren't any wonders
We're just two different types of people here
And your good intentions are blunders

About this poem

It's about embracing the darkness, and that being alone and in the dark doesn't mean you're empty and a loner. Those bright wide smiles from people in the daytime don't always equate to the person being 'good'. I like the light as much as the next person, but the night reveals more for those willing to listen.

I write poetry and it is often terrible. The poetry I wrote previously was so terrible I decided to take a ten year break. However, it seems the decade I decided to do everything but write poetry has seemingly increased my ability to write half-decent poetry. Life is weird. more…
