Underway

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

A new day to gather thought
and focus For a coming reality,

built of the past actions
Changing further still

as it was, even Into whatever
promise the next day brings

Knowing we bring our beliefs
into its potential Of a brighter day.

Engineering watches set.
Ramping up accelerator banks.

Powering gyroscopic stabilizers.
Synchronizing phase couplings.

Energizing, engaging main engines
With inertial drive…

and pull away…

Entering the operating field.
Interphase complete

Time to pause
reflect.

Attending to the ship’s logs

Tally what has been gained
Lost and found

Versus the cost in time,

whether or not you’d consider
reversing course as in changing tides

Find yourself

becoming somewhat
more realigned

Being patient,
gratified to find,

we have passed
Our tests, grown further,

done our best
to move on

Looking back down
the corridor of our lives

Formed our chosen views
to serve our nation

Although We may not always agree
upon how we’ll get there

or to discount the contribution of tough,
Though kindhearted people

who have brought this country
to where it is.

On its way to
where it ought to be.

Believing it possible
Even when We the people

Do not seem to be
headed in the right direction

Finding a way
from no way

Yet we survive

free to fight on
another day

On the way back

Back to back

To life
