Freeze

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

Shrieking winds

Shred all substance in the air

Icy blasts render creatures
Motionless

Shivering

Seeking cover
deep hidden shelters

safe If not warm
with distant memories

of
Spring Summer
Fall

Which live on
as dreams

Thoughts faraway
of warmth and calm serene

Perhaps accompanied
by loved ones near

Now lost in the icy grip
of winters deadly kiss

Frigid air
leaving its frosty signature

Upon the air
as snow

upon
fallen leaves
Grass

The surfaces of waters
frozen Like glass

Nothing
escapes its reach

Seeking depths
Within the core

extending
more

If long enough
to cut deep into our bones

Its snowflakes
attacking relentlessly

Tumbling end to end
Biting weary flesh fiercely

 Grist in the wind

Frozen fingers
reaching around our throats

Seeking
to steal our breaths

Praying we come
no further into its realm

as it tastes
our frozen flesh

To receive
its frosty blessing

lost to the bitter cold
in surrender to

The icy kiss
of death
