Ricochet

Charles Fields II 1955 (Fort Bragg, NC)

It’s as fate suggests

A hidden tally
A brutal test

A cascade
of random emotions

In a
mad dash

An avalanche
of despair

A pairing
of anguish

And

A desperate cry
for warmth

in
need

Of calm
healing relief

which
wasn’t there

With
few left

to
share our grief

For all intent
Left to nurse wounds

and bury loved ones,
largely alone

Further down the path
A foul mood of depression

brings unbearable oppression
for no apparent gain

Then hatred, interference,
punishment, beatings,

berating, cheating
With an effervescence

raising the temperature
of its wrath exponentially

in silent auctions
Between mimes,

Captured in tears
of emotions Roaring tides,

Changing moods
as changing seasons

Autumn comes
And with it

Ugly echoes
heard in the night

Of hatred Cross burnings
And war drums

A descending sadness
falls Like dying leaves

Creating massive graveyards
Of collective pain.

Yet all too soon
They’ll all be returned to earth

Turning in
Just in time

for The calling
of spring,

Steady pouring
with the quiet Blessing rains

Allowing, nature to return
To living memories,

To let love
which remains Flourish...

and
let all retained

by nature
A next time

To raise their young
Again
