Walking

I am walking down an old dirt road walled with trees towards my future.  I see nothing ahead of me. I begin to wonder if there is something wrong as something tells me this is my future. I am scared of what this could possibly mean, so I turn around to go back to my past, but the road is gone.  I look around at where I am; the soft green grass, the bright blue sky, there is no sun, but is is light.  It's like the land of doves.  As I walk around, no idea of where I'm going, I begin to understand that there is nothing for me and no one to care for me.  I fall to the ground and weep.  I realize that there is no reason to do this, for there is no one can hear or help me here in my world of silence.  So, I stand and walk towards the horizon and into my future of utter silence.

About this poem

I wrote this prose at the end of 6th grade, on June 20, 1991 and it describes how I felt at that time. I had just moved cross-country with my immediate family. I went into the 6th grade at an elementary school, whereas all my friends back in Wisconsin got to go into the junior high.

Wow! This was written when you were in the 6th grade? I’d love to see what you’re writing these days! Incredible …

I took some notes on a handful of poems from the August contest and thought I would share what notes I took on yours. Please, let me know if I was close or not:

“Similar to the absurdist philosophy of the French existentialists (especially Camus), this poem explores the dread of uncertainty and the apparent meaninglessness of all that exists around us. In it, the protagonist seemingly suddenly appears out of nowhere with a road ahead, and no past [or road] behind. Found in a state of ‘throwness’ (Heidegger) and all alone …”

I intended to write more after the ellipsis but the contest was over before I could get back to it. Anyhow, what an amazing write for a 6th grader trying to express her angst. Thank you for sharing.
